The discovery of Bhimbetka was a great milestone in Indian archaeology as scientists found various evidences starting from Stone Age in BC 30,000 to 1 century BC. However, the most famous out of them is the dancing figures. There are also numerous paintings featuring various animals, scenes from hunting and social rituals. Due to its archaeological significance, UNESCO declared Bhimbetka as a World Heritage Site.

Here I am again with the text for our blog. It’s been a while since my last post and now it’s easier to write, thanks to ChatGPT (and other AI buddies). 😊

I have already written before about dance and painting in the text Dance on Canvas. (October 2021).

And now, something also very beautiful: Series “Dance Sheet” (1-6) by Franc Grabmayr!

Franz Grabmayr was born on December 8, 1927. and passed away on April 14, 2015 in Vienna, Austria.

He started painting at the age of 12, mostly the nature he was surrounded by growing up. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. Supported by his wife, he left his teaching career in 1962. and devoted himself exclusively to painting.

Grabmayr was known for his expressionist style of painting. His works are often inspired by nature, especially landscapes and atmospheric conditions. He was a pioneer in Austrian post-abstract expressionism.

He is known for his energetic brushstrokes and thick layers of paint, often applied with a spatula (here you can see one picture). He used a variety of materials, including oil, acrylic and sand, to achieve texture and depth in his works.

He has had many solo and group exhibitions in Austria and throughout Europe. His works are in many public and private collections.

His work is exhibited in Vienna museum Albertina till Oct 13th 2024. There are also pictures from Series “Dance Sheet”.

Franz Grabmayr’s series of paintings “Dance Sheet (1-6)” is characterized by his unique ability to convey the movement and energy of dance through abstract forms and vibrant colors.

A few key aspects of these pictures are:

Dance Energy: Each image from the “Dance Sheet” series reflects the movements of the dancers. Grabmayr uses thick application of paint and brisk brush strokes to depict the rhythmic and dynamic elements of the dance.

Abstract Expression: Instead of accurately depicting dance figures, Grabmayr focuses on abstract forms that convey the essence of movement. These images are not direct representations of dance, but emotional and visual responses to it.

Texture: Using thick layers of paint, often applied with a knife, Grabmayr creates a rich texture that adds depth and complexity to his paintings. The texture can resemble materials such as fabric or paper in motion, further enhancing the sense of dance dynamics.

Colors: The color palette he uses varies, but often includes bright and contrasting colors that contribute to a sense of energy and vitality.

Rhythmicity: Throughout each work in the “Dance Sheet” series, a clear rhythmic component is present. The brushstrokes and color arrangement guide the viewer through the composition, much like the rhythm and movement guide the dancer through the dance.

Emotional Expression: Grabmayr uses abstraction to express the emotional side of dance. Each image carries with it a feeling of joy, passion or energy, with which the artist manages to convey not only the physical, but also the emotional aspects of dance.

The viewer is invited to intuitively connect with the images, interpreting the movements and dynamics in a personal way. Grabmayr’s paintings allow for different interpretations, as they are abstract and open to subjective interpretation.

These paintings are an example of how art can translate experiences and emotions into a visual language that speaks directly to the viewer.

Definitely I recommend that you explore the “Dance Sheet” series in more depth, by visiting relevant exhibitions or museums that own Franz Grabmayr’s works, or by viewing them online here or anywhere else on the internet.

Enjoy the beauty of these paintings!

Dance first. Think later. That is a natural order. Dance first. Think later. That is a natural order. Samuel Beckett

Dance Academy USA gives us 10 reasons why dance is good for You! We are just giving a list here that summarize well all we have been writing about in our blog.

So, why is it good for you to dance? Here are the top 10 reasons:

1) Great way to exercise and stay fit

2) Burn calories

3) Improved health

4) Greater Coordination

5) Good for bones and joints

6) Build confidence

7) Great way to meet new people

8) Lifts your mood

9) Good for your Mind

10) Improved overall well-being

There are, of course, many more benefits of dancing, but we have to stop somewhere.

We will leave you here to think why it would be good for you to dance? Write down what you would like to achieve with attending dance classes in a year time from today?

Actually, no! As Beckett says: “Dance first. Think later”.

So come to our workshops! Here you can read about programs we offer and about our workshops.

Till now, we had few interviews with dancers and parents of dancers.

Today, we are presenting you Draga Gligorijevic and her mother Natasa, from Vucje, South Serbia.

Our mission is to promote dancing, also through the support to dancers from small towns and cities just as it is in this case.

P&G: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF BRIEFLY FOR OUR READERS (YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD, BASIC INFORMATION AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL US AND YOU ARE HAPPY TO SHARE)

Natasa: My name is Natasa Gligorijevic. I hold BSc in Agriculture. I live in Vucje, small settlement in the South of Serbia, That is the environment where deviations from conventional norms of behavior are condemned because they are not understood. I love people, I love honesty. Above all, I love music and dancing. There was music in my house all day.

I am now 46 years old and have many beautiful and ugly situations behind me. Through it all, music helped me. I laugh with music, I cry and mourn with the music. It helps me to experience sadness, anger, rage, disappointments, happiness and joy in a way that these emotions do not remain stuck in the body and brain. Throughout my life, I have learned that when emotions are stuck in any part of the body, they certainly lead to illness. I experienced that myself, when I looked death in the eye giving birth to my first child.

I am the mother of two girls, my older daughter is now 13 years old, she draws well, she writes poems and stories. She has been awarded several times in various competitions for elementary school pupils, and she also has a gift for singing. The younger is a born ballerina, like me. She goes to the fourth grade of elementary school and it bothers her a lot, that her friends tell her that it is stupid and pointless to train ballet, but we are working to change that. She likes to draw and watch cartoons, especially dance movies. Se helps me in the garden and around the house.

I live in the countryside, I nurture my semi-organic garden. My husband is a great support to the children and me.

P&G: YOU ALSO DANCED, PLEASE DESCRIBE US SHORTLY HOW?

Natasa:I was delighted with the group Lokice, which performed with famous Yugoslav pop star signer Zdravko Colic and the dance group of Petar Slaj. That enthusiasm still accompanies and inspires me today; I imagine myself playing in one such group. My desire to dance was not immediately accepted. I was very shy and introvert child. In the sixth grade, I get the opportunity to form a group and invite all the girls from 5th to 8th grade to come to the library to audition. The girls were selected, the group was formed and we practiced three times a week. In 1987, at the festival of modern youth ballet of Serbia in Bela Palanka, our group “Mladost” won the third place. Perfect experience, happiness, joy and energy to keep dancing. It was my youthful dream come true. I learned to hold my body properly, I was in good shape and most importantly for me, I gained faith in myself.

P&G: SINCE WHEN YOUR CHILD DANCE AND WHY? WHO IS HER INSPIRATION IN DANCING?

Natasa: My younger daughter Draga has been dancing since she was 6, with breaks during the winter, because we are 15 kilometers away from the city. It is difficult during winter time, there are no buses, or they are late. My husband then worked in the factory in three shifts and could not provide her lift when she needed it. But we have been overcoming all the challenges!

I believe Draga started to love dancing because of me, as sometimes I just dance at home for no particular reason, I hear the song, I stop what I’m doing, I dance a bit and then move on.

I first noticed that he felt the rhythm at the age of two. Standing in front of the TV, there is a song by a cartoonist and she started making movements. That was the trigger for me to pay attention to that talent. When she plays, she has a different look in her eyes, a different body language. She likes the fact that there are children around her, who love to dance. At the dance, the group accepted her, she made friends, whom she doesnot have ins school, because everyone thinks she is weird because she doesn’t talk about games, famous TickToker influencers or YouTube stars. She is happy, proud and smiling at the dance. At first, she liked shiny costumes, skirts and hairstyles. Later, she finds inspiration in the fact that she is getting better, the coaches praise her all the time. She also exercises at home, between trainings, she has a sense of belonging and that fulfills her. When she plays, it is her world of beauty, love, happiness. I think that’s her inspiration. First, she played jazz ballet for two years, and then she switched to show dance, and she likes that very much.

P&G: HOW DO YOU THING DANCE WAS USEFUL FOR YOUR CHILD AND CHILDREN IN GENERAL? WHAT DOES YOUR CHILD ENJOY THE MOST IN DANCE?

Natasa: Dancing helped Draga a lot in a psychological sense. She raised her self-confidence. She stopped crying every hour, either at home or at school. An example at school, a teacher points out a mistake to her, she cries, her friends won’t hang out with her, she cries.

The dance erased it all. She learned to have her own position, to freely express her opinion or suggestion. She realized that everyone is different and that she should respect that. She created a sense of responsibility for herself and others around her. She is mentally stronger and thus better in school. The healthier one is less likely to catch a cold, because dancing also influenced the strengthening of immunity. She is happy, and the smile I see whenever we go to training is indescribably the most beautiful sight for parents. She is no longer ashamed to proudly say that her group won first place in a competition. She likes the fact that she can express her feelings through movement, because dancing is a bit like acting.

P&G: WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PARENTS TO TAKE THEIR CHILDREN TO DANCING SCHOOL?

Natasa: From my experience and my story, dance is the teacher of life. Dancing is a way of life. Children acquire important life skills at the dance. Self-confidence. The importance of teamwork in the direction of success. The importance of independent work, responsibility, towards oneself and the team. Respect for diversity. Boys learn the importance of gender equality. They strengthen the mental structure, develop cerebral convolutions. The body secretes the hormone of happiness in larger quantities, because when they dance, there is only music, movement, happiness, peace and joy. There is no place for anger, stress, anger, anxiety, violence in dance. They are physically healthy. Their bodies develop properly. The most important thing for me is that dancing has a beneficial effect on psychophysical health. Every parent’s health is the most important thing for every parent.

We wrote earlier about nature and dance.

Here we continue to write about it. Actually, we have two interesting stories to share. One story is about pinguins that dance to survive and the other one is about ballerina dancing to save swans.

Living in the Antarctic can be extremely chilly, so Emperor penguins perform a mass dance to stay warm in such a harsh climate. The penguins huddle together; their behavior is obviously an instinctual action in order to survive in such harsh climates.

These unique birds that do not fly huddle together to keep not only themselves warm during the coldest temperatures, but also their eggs and young. If one lead Emperor penguin makes the slightest movement in any direction, the whole mass ensues in a wave of black and white feathered bodies in order to keep the warmth.

A physicist named Daniel Zitterbart, at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, studied the Emperor Penguin flocks. He found that they started to huddle closer together when temperatures start dropped below zero. The birds use each others body heat and mass to avoid the wind and chilling temps.

This is really a great example of how dance connects and also enables this cute birds to survive.

Just as I found this article about pinguins that dance the news came out that a Russian ballerina from the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre dressed in full costume performs scenes from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake… not on stage though, but on the frozen Gulf of Finland. This is Ilmira Bagrautinova’s way of objecting against the construction of a port in Batareinaya Bay, a popular beach about 100 km west of St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city. Bagrautinova danced in -15C and posted her videos online. She hopes her performance will save real swans which nest in the bay.

This is how dance is used in ecological activism.

That beautiful dance at -15C you can watch here.

Jerome Robbins (October 11, 1918 – July 29, 1998) was an American choreographer, director, dancer, and theater producer who worked in classical ballet, on stage, film, and television. Among his numerous stage productions were On the Town, Peter Pan, High Button Shoes, The King and I, The Pajama Game, Bells Are Ringing, West Side Story, Gypsy, and Fiddler on the Roof. Robbins was a five-time Tony Award-winner and a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. He received two Academy Awards, including the 1961 Academy Award for Best Director with Robert Wise for West Side Story. (Source: Wikipedia)

Constantly between classical ballet and Brodway musical he was highly successful in both and one of the greatest coreographers of the 20th century!

A documentary about Robbins‘ life and work, Something to Dance About, featuring excerpts from his journals, archival performance and rehearsal footage, and interviews with Robbins and his colleagues, premiered on PBS in 2009 and won both an Emmy and a Peabody Award the same year.

Narrated by Ron Rifkin, the documentary includes excerpts from Robbins’ journals, archival performance footage, never-before-seen rehearsal recordings and interviews with Robbins himself and many of his friends, colleagues and critics, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Jacques d’Amboise, Suzanne Farrell, Arthur Laurents, Peter Martins, Frank Rich, Chita Rivera, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein. It is an amazing programme and should be seen over and over again. It was broadcasted at the Serbian National Television (RTS3) on January 30th 2021. and that has inspired us to write this article.

Robbins was one of the most popular and imaginative American choreographers of the 20th century. Robbins was first known for his skillful use of contemporary American themes in ballets and Broadway and Hollywood musicals. He won acclaim for highly innovative ballets structured within the traditional framework of classical dance movements.

Following a bicycle accident in 1990 and heart-valve surgery in 1994, in 1996 he began showing signs of a form of Parkinson’s disease, and his hearing was quickly deteriorating. He nevertheless staged Les Noces for City Ballet in 1998, his last project.

Robbins suffered a stroke in July 1998, two months after the premiere of his re-staging of Les Noces. He died at his home in New York on July 29, 1998. On the evening of his death, the lights of Broadway were dimmed for a moment in tribute. (Source: Wikipedia)

“Give me something to dance about and I’ll dance it.” is his quote.

Truly amazing and inspirational life of a dancer!

Dear readers!

We do hope you have had nice and peaceful holiday season.

We wish everyone a Happy 2021. and that we soon return to our normal lives.

We would also like to thank you for following us over the past year and liking our posts on social media.

For the beginning of this year, the story of how dancing actually brought us closer during the year of isolation.

At National Geographic site I found this text: „Virtual dance parties are popular. What’s behind their rise?

Creative dancers share genes with strong social communicators, suggesting that we evolved to overcome isolation“ written BY MICKELA MALLOZZI and PUBLISHED APRIL 28, 2020.

Here are just pieces of a text you can read here. Mickela beautifully explained it and I am copying here just a small part of her text:

Pandemic lockdowns might be pervasive, but not all our movements are restricted. This has led to a rise in dance, as people seek fitness, stress relief, healing—and connection. Live classes on Instagram and YouTube have proliferated. Living rooms are becoming rave scenes thanks to live-streaming dance parties. And mindfulness is taking center stage at dance therapy sessions on Zoom.

It was all happening in time for International Dance Day on April 29. This annual UNESCO-supported event celebrates dance and encourages governments to recognize its social and educational significance. The day underscores UNESCO’s commitment to dancers a cultural expression; Spain’s flamenco along with many other dances, are inscribed on the organization’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list (among them is Serbian kolo).

Choreography is a conversation. Thanks to the recent uptick in virtual events, geographically separated groups of strangers are moving in the same direction to the same rhythm without speaking a word. Recent research has proven that even our earliest ancestors recognized the health and social benefits of dance.

According to a recent study published in the Public Library of Science’s Genetics Journal, creative dancers share two similar genes with good social communicators. These researchers believe the simultaneous evolution of those genes dates back more than 1.5 million years, when group organization and communication were essential for survival. Our prehistoric ancestors who were good dancers used those skills for bonding, social interaction, and courtship. We dance to celebrate harvests, beckon much-needed rain, and bring healing.

Maybe our obsession with dance shouldn’t come as a surprise—studies prove it’s good for the brain. Not only do endorphins kick in with the physical touch and the aerobic movement of dance, but frequent dancing increases neuroplasticity, the ability to form new neural connections, which help in recovering from injury and disease. In a 21-year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City found that dancing reduces the risk of dementia by 76 percent.

Here are a few ways to groove virtually.

Among them is this one: New York City Ballet’s Tiler Peck, a principal dancer, hosts live daily ballet classes on Instagram. No barre necessary—just use a chair!

In conclusion, all we can tell you is: Dance!

Everyday I go for an early morning walk.

That morning, not far from my house, in front of a beautiful villa, there was this leaf dancing.

I paused to look. And to make a video.

https://plesigrad.rs/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dancing-leaf-sladja-oct2020.mp4

This leaf danced calmly, happily and carefree.

I couldn’t see what was holding it in the air, the dance was simply magical!

That gave me the idea to find out more about dance and nature; what dances in nature and how.

Of course, animals are dancers! I first found that on the BBC website. Some of them are good dancers, some are not. In addition to the video on this site where you will see animals dancing, there is a list of 10 exceptional dancers from the animal world. Among them is one spider, then one whale and many others.

Some of them perform the most beautiful synchronized dances, some use dance to prepare for mating, some of them prepare stage where they will dance in a special way, some dance no less and no more than a waltz, slowly and gracefully.

And how do trees and flowers dance? For example, when the wind blows, they have no choice but to bend, to dance and be flexible in order to survive. Forest bending to the wind protect us from it, so trees dancing have a very important defensive role.

The Dancing Forest (Russian: Танцующий лес) is a pine forest in Russia noted for its unusually twisted trees. Unlike drunken forests, the trees in the Dancing Forest are twisted into several patterns, such as rings, hearts and convoluted spirals bending to the ground. The exact cause of the trees’ distortion is unknown. According to one version, the distortion is caused by the activity of the caterpillar of Rhyacionia buoliana. In the folk version, the Dancing Forest follows the movement of the sands. So it dances with a sand.

Then I started looking for flowers that dance. Again as for trees, flowers certainly dance in the wind. And flowers and plants, they love music, it has been proven that music as well as beautiful words have a good effect on flowers.

The Lonicera plant, known as Honeysuckle, has flowers that look like they are dancing together, similar to kolo.

Internet search also took me to many courses of dancing in nature, dancing in the woods with trees, dancing for flowers, etc. (just type Dance in Nature in browser, and you will see).

So, next time when you are in the forest or in the meadow, or with your pet, pay attention, there is for sure somebody dancing! 😉

Netflix TV Series “The Crown”, Season 4 is just released this November. This season introduces us Lady Diana.

Diana, Princess of Wales (born Diana Frances Spencer; 1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997) was a member of the British royal family. She was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, the heir apparent to the British throne, and was the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry (Diana, Princess of Wales – Wikipedia).

Diana was talented in music, dance, and sports. She studied ballet and tap dance. Diana also worked as a dance instructor for youth until a skiing accident.

It is well known fact that she had suffered from depression, “rampant bulimia” and had engaged numerous times in the act of self-mutilation. Dance was like a cure, we can see her dancing in TV Series at different occasions. “I love dance. This is where I can express myself and show how I feel”, she said.

So, I decided to write about Princess and her love for dancing.

There are several known occasions when Diana was dancing. And you can see pictures 😊

Ballet star Wayne Sleep worked with Princess Diana to surprise her husband, Prince Charles, with a special performance for his birthday in 1985 at the Royal Opera House (Dancing with Diana: Princess wowed audience in surprise appearance – YouTube)

Sleep met Lady Di in a rehearsal studio in west London. Sleep said: “She was in leg-warmers and a leotard. My first thought was, she’s too tall to dance with me, I’ll be a laughing stock: I’m 5ft 2in and she’s 5ft 11in. But I soon realized she had a good sense of humor, and that we could have some fun with our height difference. She’d already decided on the music: Billy Joel’s ‘Uptown Girl.'”

The choreography reportedly included “jazz, ballet, even a kick line,” and Diana seemed to love every minute of it. “Now I understand the buzz you get from performing,” she later told Sleep.

Prince Charles was not happy with her performing. He did not like it and he was jealous as all attention again was on Diana.

There is her famous dance with John Travolta, back in 1985. They had a great time together, Travolta said he would never forgot how happy she was and how she looked at him when he asked her to dance with him (John Travolta and Lady Diana Dance – video dailymotion).

Only recently we could see photos of Diana dancing in White House in 1985 with president Regan and actors Tom Selleck and Clint Eastwood See Previously Unpublished Pictures of Diana Dancing With Tom Selleck and Clint Eastwood (parade.com).

Dance was helping Diana to go through difficult times in her marriage and life. She loved dancing and she was very talented.

Dance is a cure. Sometimes the best one.

On 31 August 1997, Diana died in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris while the driver was fleeing the paparazzi. She was 36.

Wherever she is now, she is dancing with grace and beauty.

The idea for this text was given to me by Suzana; she sent me a text about how much Sharon Stone likes to dance. (text Is in Serbian language).

And then the words of the song “We dance” of the famous Croatian Group “Prljavo Kazaliste”, which we all here love and know, imposed themselves as the title.

Let’s see who else loves dance and music. I’m not going to write about actors, because dance and music are part of their job.

I will start with the fact that there is a traditional belief that mathematicians are good musicians and that mathematics and music are connected. As Timothy Gowers says in his book “Mathematics, A Very Short Introduction”: “The consequence is that no one is surprised to learn that a mathematician is a good pianist, that his hobby is composing or that he likes to listen to Bach”. Yet in that book Gowers makes it clear that there is no direct connection between mathematics and music, at least not proven.

But then, for example, Einstein adored the violin. It is known fact that he said that if he were not a physicist, he would be a musician. I know from experience how important the violin is for imagination and thinking out of the box (although it is a “frustrating instrument in terms of mastering”, as Young Sheldon would say). Einstein said that imagination is more important than knowledge; he loved his violin, named Lina and he claimed violin gave him the most joy in his life. He frequently played classical music as a brainstorming technique.

Another, world-famous scientist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, Richard Feynman also played – drums. Douglas Hofstadter, author of “I am a strange Loop” also has a huge interest in music, which helps them understand how we exist, who we are, and where we come from. Lazar Džamić, our and world-renowned marketing expert, author of several fantastic books, also plays drums.

Now, lets see who loves to dance and how they dance. In my search for famous people who love to dance, I came across this article. Here you can also see what it looks like when some of the famous people dancing like nobody’s watching. In these photos, everyone is in a good mood, smiling, except Putin 😉

And on the list are Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Pablo Picasso, Che Guevara, Jackie Kennedy…

The Queen is passionate for her horses, horse racing, and she loves corgis, but the official royal website has revealed one little known hobby about Her Majesty – she loves Scottish country dancing.

I also found this funny story about the party at Windsor Castle: “She (The Queen) goes on the dance floor at which point people were going, “Ooh look, she’s going to have a dance.”

She was on the floor and everybody said, “My goodness me, there is the Dancing Queen.”

According to the presenter, the queen appreciated the irony of the situation — and even makes a point of dancing when she hears the song.

That is a true story and she said audibly, “I always try to dance when this song comes on because I am the queen and I like to dance”. 😊

Some of the most beautiful sayings about dance were given by Nietzsche, Einstein, Plato, Confucius, Jane Austen, Yates, Shakespeare, Krishnamurti, Rumi… We have given some of them in our blog. These beautiful quotes are a real proof of the importance and healing power of dance.

Personally, I know a lot of IT experts, university professors, translators, doctors, therapists from all over the world who are great dancers. Some of them have been my mentors and tutors over the years; learning with them was fully of joy; we “danced” together beautifully while learning new things.

We will write about them in some of our future blogs.

Till then, dance all day and night like nobody’s watching 😉
